ESU Seeking Girls Who Code

September 10, 2019 Categories: Community, Computer Science, News Release

Computer science majors at East Stroudsburg University are reaching out to the community for young women to join their Girls Who Code Club. The club meets on Thursdays, September 19 – December 5, and is open to girls in grades six through 12 who are interested in learning about computer science. This is a great opportunity for girls to become familiar with computer science concepts, gain experience building projects, and get a better understanding of practical applications of coding. The group will meet on ESU’s campus in the Warren E. ’55 and Sandra Hoeffner Science & Technology, room 355.

Girls who join the club will participate in fun and simple online coding tutorials, build community through interactive activities, and learn about inspiring role models. The tutorials will help the members build animations, games, and more. Club members will also work together to design and build a Girls Who Code Project that solves a real world problem through code. With ESU students majoring in computer science serving as instructors this year, the club is able to accommodate all levels of experience with computer science – beginners are welcomed and encouraged to join and learn more about coding!

Girls Who Code is a national non-profit organization that was founded with a single mission: to close the gender gap in technology. According to the Girls Who Code website, only one in five computer science graduates are women, even though tech jobs are among the fastest growing in the country. The Girls Who Code Club at ESU aims to increase interest in computer science among young girls in our community in hopes have increasing the number of women working in the field in the future.
