An Entrepreneurial Future Led by Innovation
March 12, 2012 Categories: ESU Success Stories
If you’re on the campus at East Stroudsburg University and put the words “Social” and “Media” together, there is one familiar student’s name that comes to mind. That would be James W Burke, a senior computer science major from Stroudsburg, Pa.
In the classroom, James writes code, assesses computer software for security breaches and is in the midst of developing his own mobile website application. But James’ interests are not strictly limited to high tech and computer skills . He’s served as a member of the ESU Orientation Staff for two years, on multiple campus committees including Leadership Advisory Board, Food Service Committee, Haiti Relief Committee , Recreation Center Advisory Council, and, as president of the Residence Hall Association. James has also been an active member of multiple other student organizations, especially the National Residence Hall Honorary, the Moses Society, the TV and Production club (as a freshman and sophomore) and Student Senate.
A Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education Board of Governors Scholarship recipient in Computer Science, James has been a valued and creative staff member in the office of the university web manager during his first three years at ESU, and has served as a member of the university web committee. He has worked on projects such as the creation and production of high quality website and YouTube videos; the result: telling the compelling ESU story in a highly powerful and creative way. Oh, and James updates the university website regularly and helps with the social media.. He’s also single-handedly designed a website for ESU’s division of Research and Economic Development.
ESU has provided me with more opportunities than I think any bigger school ever could have
“I’ve learned more about the field of computer science outside of the classroom than a book could ever teach me and I’ve spent these formative years learning leadership and management skills from ESU staff members as well as from my professors.”
As he prepares to graduate in May, James is putting the finishing touches on a business plan and is preparing to join the ESU Business Accelerator to launch his own web-based company. “I’ll graduate with a great path ahead,” says James. “And I owe it all to ESU.”
