Latino Heritage Month Film Series Returns to ESU

East Stroudsburg University of Pennsylvania (ESU) celebrates Latino Heritage Month with its sixth annual Latino Heritage Film Series. The festival will run from September 18 through October 23 on ESU’s campus. The festival is co-sponsored by the department of modern languages, philosophy, and religion; the office of the Provost; and the ESU Foundation.

Kicking off the film festival on Tuesday, September 18, will be El techo/On the Roof (Cuba/Nicaragua) at 2 p.m. in Stroud Hall, room 117. The film series will continue on Tuesday, September 25 with El future perfecto/The Future Perfect (Argentina) at 2 p.m. in Stroud Hall Room 117. Two days later, Thursday, September 27, Clinica de Migrantes (USA) will be shown at 6 p.m. in Room 117 of the Science and Technology Center. Steven Larson, MD, who started the clinic featured in the film, will introduce the movie and be available for questions after. Dr. Larson is co-founder and the Executive Director of Puentes de Salud. He is assistant dean for global health programs and an associate professor in the department of emergency medicine at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. He received his B.A. in fine arts from Haverford College and his M.D. from the University of Pennsylvania. Over the past 20 years, Dr. Larson has developed an extensive working knowledge of the health care issues facing immigrant populations in the United States and in under-served populations worldwide. The screening of Clinica de Migrantes is sponsored by the college of health sciences and the division of student affairs.

On Tuesday, October 2, La sonrisa verdadera/True Smile (Spain) will be shown at 2 p.m. in Stroud Hall, room 117. Estiu 1993/Summer 1993 (Spain) will be shown on Tuesday, October 16 at 2 p.m. in Stroud Hall, room 117. The film series concludes on Tuesday, October, 23 with La Soledad (Venezuela, Canada, Italy) at 2 p.m in Stroud Hall, room 117.

The following films will also be shown in Beers Lecture Hall the weekend of October 13-14. On Saturday, October 13 El techo/On the Roof will be shown at 1 p.m, followed by El future perfecto/The Future Perfect at 3 p.m., and La sonrisa verdadera/True Smile at 5 p.m. On Sunday, October 14 Estiu 1993/Summer 1993 will be shown at 1 p.m. followed by La Soledad at 3 p.m.
