East Stroudsburg University of Pennsylvania’s junior nursing majors will participate in the annual Harvest Full of Hope Conference on October 8. The conference will take place from 8 a.m. – 4 p.m. at ArtsQuest Center at SteelStacks in Bethlehem. ESU’s students will offer free screenings for Metabolic Syndrome.
Harvest Full of Hope, an annual conference meant to increase mental health awareness and decrease the stigma of mental illness in the community, began in 2001 at Allentown State Hospital. In 2002, the event was opened to include mental health providers throughout the Lehigh Valley. This is the second year that ESU nursing students will provide the screenings.
“This conference is an extraordinary opportunity for consumers of mental health services and all providers, including nurses, psychologists, counselors, psychiatrists, and social workers to come together to learn about achieving the highest level of wellness,” Suzanne Prestoy, Ph.D., associate professor of nursing said.
Those attending the conference will have the chance to listen to keynote speaker, Christal Collins, Ph.D., Certified Peer Specialist, and a state trainer and consumer for child protective services. The audience will also have a choice of various workshops including: Rapid Recovery from Stressful Situations, Recognizing and Treating Depression in the Elderly, and the Latest Trends in Behavioral Health, to name a few.
“This event is a wonderful service, and our students contribute to making this conference a success,” Prestoy said.
The conference is open to the public, walk-ins are welcome, and it is free of charge. For more information contact Dr. Prestoy at 570-422-3563 or sprestoy@esu.edu.
