Anthony Drago, Ed.D., professor, chair of psychology at East Stroudsburg University of Pennsylvania, and a licensed psychologist and Rick Wesp, Ph.D., distinguished professor of psychology, presented two in-service workshops for employees of the Lutheran Social Services of the Virgin Islands (LSSVI) and AmeriCorps in St. Croix last month.

The sessions titled Stress: Causes, Consequences and Coping focused on the causes of stress, how the brain processes different type of stress and unhealthy side effects of stress. They also offered the attendees instructions on how to reduce stress and practice with stress-reduction techniques.

The opportunities to participate in this program with LSSVI stems from a course that Dr. Wesp teaches in St. Croix: Cross-Cultural Applications of Behavior Therapy. This course has met every year since 2002. Over 150 students have taken the course and 14 are registered for this summer.

When Dr. Drago was invited to St. Croix to present on Mood Disorders and Suicide Prevention to LSSVI and AmeriCorps staff in 2013-2014, it only made sense for him to team up with Dr. Wesp to offer additional training to LSSVI and AmeriCorps, an intensive service program supported by the federal government, staff this January.

The professors’ lectures identified emotional and physical consequences of chronic stress and demonstrated stress management procedures, including Progressive Relaxation, Biofeedback and Cognitive Therapy.
