East Stroudsburg University of Pennsylvania’s political science department inducted 20 members into its honor society on Friday, April 17. The department started a new tradition where alumni of the program were invited back to share personal experiences, and educate students about life outside the classroom. “Faculty will also get the chance to learn from these young alumni how to improve our instructional strategies to better prepare our current students,” said Samuel Quainoo, Ph.D., chair and professor of political science.

The keynote speaker was alumna Jolee M. Van Horn, J.D., who graduated with a B.A. in political science in 2010. Van Horn earned her J.D. from Widener University School of Law in 2013, and served as a senior staff member of the Widener Law Journal. Since then, Van Horn published an academic survey on the Pennsylvania Right-to-Know law in the journal. Van Horn is currently an associate with Rawle & Henderson LLP’s Harrisburg office.

“ESU has helped me prepare for my current career by giving me the building blocks I needed to be a successful lawyer,” Dr. Van Horn said. “I believe it is important to speak to current students of the political science department because I want to instill the confidence in them to know that they can be anything they want to be and no profession is out of their reach.”

The department also presented certificates to the winners of the McGee and Gaglione Scholarships. Established by Dr. Patricia Crotty, professor emerita and former chair of political science, the Joseph J. McGee Memorial Endowed Scholarship honors the memory of Dr. Crotty’s father, the late Joseph McGee. The Gaglione scholarship is named for Dr. Anthony Gaglione, who served as a professor for many years until the early 1990s. His family established an endowed scholarship to honor him and his service to ESU. Both scholarships are worth slightly more than $1,000 annually. Other scholarships include the political science graduate scholarship funded by Jeffrey Weber, Ph.D., associate dean of the college of arts and sciences, and Mrs. Weber, which will be awarded to an incoming public administration graduate student.

Political science students are also eligible to apply for the Anna Quainoo International Students scholarship, which is open to all international students of ESU. The scholarship is funded by Dr. Sam Quainoo, to honor his wife, Anna.
