Five Doctoral Degrees to be Awarded at Winter Commencement

Five doctoral degrees in administration and leadership studies will be awarded during fall commencement exercises at East Stroudsburg University of Pennsylvania on Saturday, December 12, at 8:45 a.m. in Koehler Fieldhouse.

Donna-CareyDonna M. Carey,  resides in Peckville with her husband, Robert, and their two children. Their daughter, Taryn, is a law student at Drexel University and their son, Riley, is a physics major at the University of Scranton. Donna currently holds the position of Director of Special Education for the Valley View School District with certifications in Special Education, Special Education Supervisor, and a Superintendent’s Letter of Eligibility.

Donna received her B.S. in special education from Marywood College, her M.S. in special education from Marywood University and her special education supervisor certificate from East Stroudsburg University.

Stephanie-HoelperLike Carey, Stephanie L. Hoelper has spent several years of her career in special education. She has been a special education teacher for eight years teaching within the populations of life skills, learning support and emotional support. She is currently employed at Stroudsburg High School as an Itinerant Support teacher within the Emotional Support program. She also works with the transition program to assist students with special needs in finding employment and gaining essential job skills to be active members of their communities.

Hoelper has not always been a teacher. She worked within the field of psychology as a therapist for several years in Massachusetts and in Pennsylvania. She focused on areas including substance abuse counseling, corrections and in residential facilities. Hoelper considers her most important job being a mother to her son, Aidan and daughter, Maribelle. She resides in East Stroudsburg with her husband and two children.

John-McKnightJohn McKnight is currently the dean of Intercultural Development and Deputy Title IX Coordinator at Lafayette College where he has worked since 2009. At Lafayette, he serves as a member of the President’s administrative leadership team, supervises professional staff for several departments, and manages a host of undergraduate student employees and volunteers. He holds a Master of Science in higher education administration from Indiana University–Bloomington and a Bachelor of Science in advertising from the University of Florida. McKnight has designed and taught courses at Indiana University, Lehigh University and Lafayette College on a range of topics related to diversity, multicultural education and social justice in K-16 educational settings. He lives in Easton with his wife, Katrina, and their two young children, Joel and Lilia.

Beth-Schieber-RobbinsBeth S. Schieber-Robbins has lived in many cities and states throughout the country. She settled down in Escondido, Ca, where she enjoys the culture and the warm winter nights. She has three children – two boys and a girl – and recently welcomed her first grandchild. Schieber-Robbins’s career has included teaching all levels of biology, physics and chemistry, and briefly teaching at the college level. Currently, she teaches biology at La Jolla High School, and physics, AP physics and biology at the Halstrom Academy. Schieber-Robbins’s plans for the future include teaching science methods courses to future science teachers at the college level.

Christopher-Joseph-SelenaChristopher Joseph Selena grew up in the Wyoming Valley and received his bachelor’s degree in psychology from Shippensburg University, and his master’s degree in counseling and educational psychology from West Chester University. He has worked in higher education for more than 10 years and is currently an assistant dean of Advising and Co-Curricular Programs and director of the Academic Tutoring and Training Information Center at Lafayette College in Easton. Chris enjoys hiking, biking, and gardening with his wife, Amy, 6-year-old twins, Olivia and Gabriel, and faithful dog, Samson. He lives in Cherry Valley.

About the Doctoral Program in Education Administration and Leadership

The professional and secondary education department at ESU developed the idea for the collaborative doctoral degree program with Indiana University of Pennsylvania in 1999.  The collaborative delivery program provides accessibility to the program for students who live in proximity to East Stroudsburg and northeast Pennsylvania.

The three-year academic package is designed to provide continuous skill development in leadership, writing, reading and research.  The program is intended for leaders in education wishing to further their knowledge, skills and expertise in the area of educational leadership.
