ESU Holds What IF? Event for Gifted Elementary School Students

On Saturday, April 15, East Stroudsburg University welcomed 65 gifted students from local and regional school districts to “What IF?: A Gifted Event.” ESU students taking Instructional Planning in Special Education (SPED215) created a day of hands-on learning for elementary and middle school aged children (grades 2-8.)

This semester, the pre-service students created lessons involving the new scientific method. They presented the method and taught a lesson showcasing the method and how it plays a role in today’s society. Lessons for the day included: impacts of oil on animals with feathers; Da Vinci science bridge; electric potato; Newtonian and non-Newtonian fluids; impact of oil spills in the Poconos; Rube Goldberg; making a catapult; and reflex or reaction.

ESU SPED215 students who prepared the day’s lessons and event were Bryan Foster, a sophomore from Dingmans Ferry, Pa.; Joseph Halus, a junior from Collegeville, Pa.; Nicholas Hinds, a senior from Walnutport, Pa.; Elizabeth Minnich, a sophomore from Pen Argyl, Pa.; Ellie Parido, a sophomore from Lancaster, Pa.; Stephanie Scupoline, a junior from Hackettstown, N.J.; Holly Soto, a sophomore from Glen Burnie, Md.; and Evan Wooby, a sophomore from Branchburg, N.J.
