State System Ready for Pivotal Weekend Bargaining Sessions with Faculty Union; Updates Student FAQs

Pennsylvania’s State System of Higher Education will continue negotiations with APSCUF as bargaining sessions resume tomorrow and are expected to run through the weekend. The System has updated its negotiations website with an expanded list of frequently asked questions received from students over the past week.

“We want our students, their parents and the public to have as much information as possible about these negotiations and the potential strike that has been announced by the faculty union,” said State System spokesman Kenn Marshall. “We are eager to return to the bargaining table to continue working with the faculty union to finalize an agreement. We have informed APSCUF that we are ready to stay at the table to make it happen. We must remain at the table until we reach a deal. Our students deserve nothing less.”

Board of Governors Approves Major Policy Revisions to Ease Student Transfers, Enhance Significance and Relevance of General Education Requirements

The Board of Governors of Pennsylvania’s State System of Higher Education has approved a trio of policy revisions that will make it easier for students to transfer to and among any of the State System universities; will update and strengthen the universities’ general education requirements; and will require that all academic programs are regularly reviewed to ensure they comply with accreditation standards and continue to meet student and employer needs.

LiveSafe Mobile App Now Available at East Stroudsburg University

In an effort to increase safety on campus, East Stroudsburg University will debut its latest safety feature during a press conference on Thursday, October 13 at 1 p.m. in the University Center. While campus is buzzing with Homecoming festivities this week, ESU campus police will introduce LiveSafe.

LiveSafe is a mobile application designed to help make college campuses a safer place by preventing crime and enabling better incident response. The LiveSafe technology includes an app for smartphone users that is connected to a cloud-based dashboard. This dashboard is monitored by officials within the ESU Police Department.

ESU Wins $4 million National Science Foundation Grant for Scholarships and Research

In the largest single grant ever awarded to East Stroudsburg University, the National Science Foundation (NSF) is giving $4 million to help transfer students complete their education at ESU in the fields of science, technology and math.

The five-year grant for the project — dubbed Clear Path — provides scholarships for about 120 students who start their education at community colleges and transfer to ESU for bachelor’s degrees in such fields as biochemistry, physics, computer science and mathematics.

Pocono Mountains’ Theater Company in Partnership with ESU Department of Theatre to Present Staged Reading of LAUGHING WILD

“Laughing Wild”, a comedy by Tony-Award winning playwright Christopher Durang, has been selected to be the second in a series of staged readings being presented through a partnership between the Pocono Mountains’ Theater Company and East Stroudsburg University’s Department of Theatre.

The comedy will be presented Saturday, October 22 at 7 p.m. in Smith-McFarland Theatre of ESU’s Fine and Performing Arts Center, Normal and Marguerite streets, East Stroudsburg, Pa.

State System Board of Governors Approves $505.2 Million Appropriation Request $61 Million Increase Would Cover Rising Costs, Support New Student Initiatives

Acknowledging the challenge, but also the necessity, the Board of Governors of Pennsylvania’s State System of Higher Education today voted unanimously to seek $505.2 million in state funding next year, an increase of $61 million over this year’s total.

The increased funding would support a variety of needs, including anticipated increases in healthcare, pensions and other personnel costs, as well as new student-oriented initiatives. Despite two consecutive years of funding increases from the state—totaling about $30 million—the State System and its universities are still dealing with serious budget issues, including a projected multi-million dollar deficit going into 2017-18.

State System, APSCUF Coaches Continue Making Progress Toward New Agreement

Negotiators from Pennsylvania’s State System of Higher Education and the union that represents athletic coaches at the 14 state-owned universities continue to make progress toward a new agreement.

Over the last two bargaining sessions, the two sides have moved closer to an overall agreement on a new contract, essentially agreeing on a variety of issues, including a communications process when a university is considering eliminating a sports program and the payment process for interim coaches. The two sides are discussing additional meeting dates to continue the talks.
