ESU Names Grand Marshals for Spring Commencement Exercises

Robert Cohen, Ph.D., professor and chair of physics, will be the grand marshal for East Stroudsburg University of Pennsylvania’s two undergraduate commencement ceremonies on Saturday, May 9, and Professor and Chair of Exercise Science Shala E. Davis, Ph.D., FACSM, will be the grand marshal for ESU’s graduate commencement ceremony on Friday, May 8 at 7 p.m.

Dr. Cohen became a faculty member in 1994. His research focus is in the structure of winter storms, with approximately 20 scientific presentations and several articles. Dr. Cohen is also active in both physics education and teacher education, authoring textbooks, manuals and book chapters, including the textbooks currently being used in three courses at ESU, and more than 35 presentations.

Since arriving at ESU, he has taught 20 different undergraduate and graduate courses in three departments. He has been instrumental in the development of the teacher preparation curricula in the secondary science areas of general science, physics, and earth and space science, for which he has authored three accreditation reports. He has been a member of numerous university and department committees and is currently serving as the president of ESU’s University Senate. He resides in East Stroudsburg, Pa.

Like Dr. Cohen, Dr. Davis continues to spend her career teaching and immersed in research. Having presented more than 45 papers at regional and national conferences, Dr. Davis’s research interests include nutrition knowledge, supplements, weight loss and training.  She is the chair of the Institutional Review Board for the Protection of Human Subjects at ESU. Dr. Davis developed the ESU master’s in exercise science program which has placed 27 students in Ph.D. programs and 200 within the sport and exercise profession over the past 10 years. She has served as a reviewer for Medicine Science, Sport and Exercise journal and the Journal of Strength and Conditioning.

Dr. Davis has more than 25 years of teaching, clinical and research experience. She has been an active member of American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) since 1988. She resides in East Stroudsburg, Pa. with her husband, John and her son Jake.
