EAST STROUDSBURG - Senior
Sydney McCarthy leads four East Stroudsburg University field hockey players named NFHCA Division II "Scholars of Distinction" for the fall 2017 semester, and ESU led DII with 24 student-athletes on the National Academic Squad, released Thursday.
McCarthy is recognized for the fourth straight year. She was the NCAA DII Elite 90 Award recipient as the student-athlete with the highest grade-point average at the national championship site for the second time in her career (2015, 2017), and was also the PSAC "Champion Scholar" for the same qualifications for the conference tournament for the second time (2016, 2017).
Also recognized on the "Scholars of Distinction" list, which requires at least a 3.90 cumulative GPA through the fall 2017 semester, are sophomore
Kristen English and freshmen
Helen Bradley and
Lexi Hartmann.
The award is presented for the sixth year and recognizes 68 student-athletes.
The National Academic Squad requires a 3.30 cumulative GPA. ESU's 24 recipients are among 417 student-athletes in DII, and 160 from the PSAC.
ESU was one of 27 programs, of 35 in DII, to gain the National Academic Team Award with a team GPA of 3.0 or higher.
