Prof. Emerita of Art, Miharu Lane Grand Marshal for Spring Undergrad Commencement Exercises

Professor Emerita of Art and a 1991 graduate of East Stroudsburg University of Pennsylvania, Miharu Lane, MFA, was the grand marshal for East Stroudsburg University’s undergraduate commencement exercises at 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. on Saturday, May 7, 2011, in Koehler Fieldhouse.  Professor Lane joined the ESU faculty in 1995, and retired in June 2011.  She attended Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond,Va., Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore,Md., and California College of Arts and Crafts in Oakland, Calif., and received her bachelor’s degree in fine arts from ESU in 1991. In 1996, Professor Lane received her MFA (Master of Fine Arts) from Marywood University.

She received numerous grants and scholarships during her tenure at ESU including: a faculty development and research grant in 2009 to develop the exhibit “Seascapes: Ocean, Bays and Marshes”; a provost instructional grant which allowed her to travel with students to Shanghai Normal University in 2009; a faculty development and research grant in 2006 to develop the exhibit “Painting on the Trail of the Hudson River School”; an ESU Foundation grant in 2005 to fund a program titled “Silkscreen Unites”; and a faculty development research grant in 2001 to paint at Tangier Island, Va., and then develop the exhibit “Mature years: Landscapes, seascapes and cityscapes.” Courses taught by Professor Lane at ESU included, “Basic Drawing,” “Watercolor Painting,” “Printmaking I,” “Two Dimensional Design,” and “Communications Graphics” among others.

Professor Lane’s career in the fine arts began when she gained recognition for her involvement in the International Women’s Art Festival Slide Exhibition in 1975. The festival traveled to the Ford Foundation Auditorium, New York, N.Y.; the Whittaker Center of Science and the Arts, Harrisburg, Pa.; and to many public institutions of higher education in the Mid-Atlantic Region. She became known nationally and internationally for her limited edition lithographs produced for Fine Arts 260, a division of the Book of the Month Club; Collector’s Guild, a division of Doubleday and Co., Ltd.; the New York Graphics Society; Original Print Collector’s Group, Ltd.; and, Art Spectrum.

She has exhibited her paintings at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden, Brooklyn, N.Y.; the Synagogue for the Arts, Tribeca, N.Y.; the Snug Harbor Cultural Center, Staten Island, N.Y.; the Allentown Art Museum, Allentown, Pa.; the Middleton Gallery, Annapolis, Md.; the Antoine Dutot Museum and Gallery, Delaware Water Gap, Pa., and at numerous other institutions of higher education in addition to ESU. She also exhibits at national parks such as the Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge and the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area.

Professor Lane served on many committees and boards while at ESU including: the Society for the Arts, Multicultural Affairs, and the Association of Pennsylvania State College and University Faculties (APSCUF) Scholarship Committee.  She served as the advisor to ESU’s Student Art Association and arranged for many art related field trips for her students to locations including: the National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C.; Storm King Art Center, Mountainville, N.Y.; Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, N.Y.; and to Shanghai Art Museum, Shanghai, China.

She continues to paint in her studio in East Stroudsburg and in the field.
