East Stroudsburg University’s Provost’s Colloquium Series, an intellectual experience that promotes dialogue among ESU faculty, staff, students, and community, continues during the Spring 2023 semester with a presentation by Laura Kieselbach, Ph.D., assistant professor of English. The presentation, “Creating Belonging for Students as a Tool for Success”, will take place on Wednesday, March 15, at 5:30 p.m. in Beers Lecture Hall. The presentation will also be live streamed on the ESU Live Events webpage.
In this presentation Dr. Kieselbach will inform about transformative teaching practices, including culturally relevant teaching, inclusive teaching, textured teaching, in which students are meant to feel a sense of belonging. Each approach that invites students to be a part of the process and a piece of the classroom puzzle is a means to engage learners in a way that allows them authentic ownership of their identity and personal academic development because they are heard, seen, and valued. These elements of teaching and learning translate to a sense of belonging that deepens engagement, participation, and success. Not regarding identity renders class engagement and belonging less likely. Establishing a pedagogical practice that cultivates, encourages, and fosters belonging is one of the most effective steps educators can take to ensure student success. The presentation will specifically engage with classroom practices, but will allow for real world application beyond that.
