East Stroudsburg University’s Provost’s Colloquium Series, an intellectual experience that promotes dialogue among ESU faculty, staff, students, and community, opens for the Fall 2022 semester with a presentation by Donna-Marie Cole-Malott, Ph.D., assistant professor, professional and secondary education. The presentation, “We are Black on Purpose For a Purpose”: Teaching From a Place of Love, Joy, Spirituality, and Culturally Relevant and Sustaining Education (CR-SE), will take place on Wednesday, September 21, at 5:30 p.m. in Beers Lecture Hall. The presentation will also be live streamed on the ESU Live Events webpage.

Dr. Cole-Malott will offer a talk on the importance of diversity and culturally relevant and sustaining education (CRSE) within our teacher educator workforce. She focuses on the current teacher shortage in Pennsylvania, the mass attrition of BIPOC educators, and what it means for a new generation of young people entering the profession.

In this talk Cole-Malott will focus on concepts that are not always synonymous with education and teaching, she highlights them as central and integral to the retention and recruitment of BIPOC educators. These concepts are love, joy, spirituality, and culturally relevant and sustaining education. National and local data paints a dystopic picture of the teaching profession—teachers leaving—school districts underfunded—and ongoing attacks on critical perspectives and ideas within schools. Cole-Malott proposes that we have to reimagine the teaching profession as a place where the humanity of all learners are honored and where they are positioned for academic and personal success.
