Without hesitating, Colleen Sullivan ’15 sold her car and packed her bags. In just over a month, she will travel to Kyrgyzstan as a Peace Corps volunteer.

Schisler Museum and McMunn Planetarium Set for Grand Opening, April 2

With a polar bear, planetary bodies, and plenty of exploration to offer, the Schisler Museum of Wildlife & Natural History and McMunn Planetarium at ESU has set its much anticipated public opening for April 2, 2016.

Housed in the Warren E. ’55 and Sandra Hoeffner Science and Technology Center on the ESU campus, the facility offers a state-of-the-art planetarium as well as a world-class museum with more than 130 taxidermy exhibits, a 300-gallon aquarium, and insects from around the globe.

Catherine T. Klingler was hired as the new curator of the Schisler Museum and McMunn Planetarium in September 2015, after working for 20 years with the Carnegie Museums of Pittsburgh in a range of roles including assistant director of exhibits, curatorial assistant, and manager of media services.

ESU Celebrates the World with First Ever Global Week

One hundred students from 21 countries around the world walk the campus of East Stroudsburg University every day. Inside a Stroud Hall classroom, individuals of many different ethnicities work alongside one another, including Hispanic, African American, Asian, Native Hawaiian and Caucasian.

“It’s like a big potluck in a small university,” Binetou Fall, a senior majoring in business management who is originally from Senegal, Africa, said.

With a desire to laud the diversity on campus, East Stroudsburg University will host its first Global Week from April 2-8.

Art + Design Students Gain Professional Experience with New Mind Design

For Cameron Maher being a part of New Mind Design (NMD) is like riding a bike with the training wheels on it.

“It really let me get a feel for what a design job is in the real world.” he said.

NMD is an in-house design agency that works with businesses throughout Northeast Pennsylvania. It is made up of East Stroudsburg University art + design students and is housed in the Innovation Center. The faculty team started NMD as a pilot run by integrating the agency in the classroom during spring 2014. The official doors for the agency opened in fall of 2014.

Warriors Fight Back with Relay for Life

This April, ESU will be hosting its annual Relay for Life Walk to help raise funding for cancer research and give individuals a better chance at beating their diagnoses.

Three years ago, Ashley Sudol’s mother had a difficult conversation with her doctor. She was told that she had lung cancer.

“I received a phone call from my father,” Sudol said. “He told me that my mom had a massive heart attack and that she might not make it.”

Gardner ’74 Honored with Lifetime Achievement Award

Mary Pakenas Gardner had a plan. In the spring of 1974, the two most important weekends of her life were just a few days away. She was to graduate from East Stroudsburg University (ESU) first and then a week later she would walk down the aisle on her wedding day. After the wedding, she and her husband, Dean Gardner, were all set to pack their bags and leave for the Peace Corps.

She never expected that a phone call would change her life. A few days before graduating from ESU, Gardner received a call asking if she would be interested in interviewing for a teaching and coaching job at Bloomsburg University.
