Two East Stroudsburg University of Pennsylvania students were selected to attend a program which seeks to help prepare and empower young women to be future leaders in the political process. The students attended the National Education for Women’s (NEW) Leadership Pennsylvania™ institute at the Pennsylvania Center for Women and Politics at Chatham University in Pittsburgh, Pa. from June 6 – 9. The NEW program is a six-day, concentrated curriculum for female students attending colleges and universities throughout Pennsylvania. Participants learned about networking, the need for women’s leadership in the political process and participated in skills-building workshops.

The ESU students chosen to attend were Mia Gaeta, a senior majoring in political science from Saylorburg, Pa. and Sierra McCown, a sophomore majoring in public health from Philadelphia, Pa. This year, 35 students were selected to attend from more than 20 colleges and universities across Pennsylvania. Kimberly S. Adams, Ph.D., professor of political science in the college of arts and sciences, recruited the students and serves as a faculty liaison between ESU and the NEW Leadership Institute. According to Adams, eight ESU students applied to the program, three were chosen and two students subsequently attended.

Participants spent a day touring the Capitol in Harrisburg and heard from successful women leaders about politics and public policy. The program included a reception at the Governor’s Residence, where a panel discussion on “Making A Difference: Women in the Executive Branch” took place. The panel, moderated by Randi Teplitz, Chair of the Pennsylvania Commission for Women, included Pennsylvania Physician General Dr. Rachel Levine and Secretary of Transportation Leslie Richards. They shared their knowledge and experience gained from working in the executive branch. ESU alumnae, and PA Supreme Court Justice, Judge Christine Donohue also addressed the students as the Keynote speaker for the Women and Public Leadership lecture. Gaeta and McCown introduced Judge Donohue to the group. State Representative Mauree Gingrich of Lebanon County’s 101st District served as the Practitioner- in-Residence for the 2017 NEW Leadership program.

The ESU Office of the President and Office of the Provost funded the students’ participation. To date, more than 15 ESU students have participated in the NEW Leadership Program.
